After many years of being a teacher and a nanny in various countries – and joining countless nanny agencies along the way – I felt a growing frustration with traditional methods of teaching and childcare, which too often prioritized giving instruction over providing empathetic understanding. To create lasting positive change, a child must feel fully seen and heard. This is a different way of approaching childcare than traditional methods, which are often closely aligned with an industrial management mindset that either incentivizes or punishes children when they fail to cooperate.
As any experienced business leader knows, you cannot control your way to motivation, participation, sharing, and cooperation. Cooperation, sharing, and intrinsic drive will all flow from a foundation of trust and respect. However, because this approach goes against the grain of traditional thinking, it takes a special type of caregiver. We call this special type of caregiver a “gentle nanny.”
Many years ago while living in New Zealand and then relocating to London, I recognised the significant need for this service.
I envisioned a different kind of agency, one that prioritized emotional intelligence, child-led learning, role-modeling, and positive guidance – one that would deliver tangible results. Today, with countless amazing success stories behind us, our mission is to help a further 10,000 families nurture genuine relationships with their children.
In a bustling world, we stand for attentive, individualized care where every child feels seen, heard, and loved.
At the heart of Gentle Nannies’ philosophy is the principle of respectful caregiving.
This is a revolutionary approach that transforms the traditional model of childcare. At the cornerstone of this approach is understanding that children, regardless of their age, are individuals deserving of the same respect and consideration as adults.
It’s about observing, understanding, and role modelling a foundation of trust and respect within the relationship. Experienced caregivers know that attempting to control, impose rules, and overuse external incentives to change behavior often does harm over the long term of the child’s development.
Instead, we need to slow down and enter the child’s world to really understand what’s going on. Only then can we nurture the child’s inherent desire to explore, learn, and cooperate. When we lead with trust and respect, everything else will fall into place.
It’s often said that parenting is the most difficult job in the world. Even the most mentally astute and emotionally disciplined business leaders who have risen to the top ranks of the Fortune 500 will readily admit there’s no job that comes close to being a parent. “Tough” is the tip of the iceberg.
If you’re a driven careerist, it can be hard – if not impossible – to juggle your professional ambitions at the same time as raising a family. For millions of hard-working mothers and fathers, this creates a choice that is not only strategically difficult but one that is sometimes literally heart-breaking: Work or family? How can I have both? It’s the ultimate rock-and-hard-place dilemma.
A nanny presents a potentially life-changing solution.
